    FRENCH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE

New Avenues Linguistic Services emphasizes oral comprehension and expression since communicative competence is the ultimate goal of its programs. Sound discrimination is also part of its classes as are rhythm, intonation, vocabulary and grammar. Practice exercises include real life job situations, simulations, role plays, oral presentations and discussions.

Specific grammar courses are also available every spring.

Participants are encouraged to purchase a textbook which is mainly used for homework to be done as reinforcement between classes.  Advanced levels use authentic materials (magazine and newspaper articles) to confront them with everyday subject matter.

Participants have a chance to formally evaluate the program at the end of a session through the filling out of a questionnaire.

The instructor fills out a progress report for each participant.  It is given out at the end of every session.

    PLACEMENT TEST

Each candidate is required to take a thirty-minute self-assessment to assess in which level he/she should be placed.
